BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell is shedding new light on the case involving an infant girl found by the side of a road in rural Moncks Corner. The sheriff confirms they are, in fact, looking for multiple suspects.
Ravenell stated that officers were called to a Catamont Road residence at approximately 3:55p.m. on Tuesday in reference to a burglary and kidnapping.
“Our investigation indicates seven unknown males with guns forced their way into the residence on Catamount Road, forcing three adults and six juveniles to the floor,” said the sheriff. “One of the gunmen struck a 52-year-old woman in the head with a gun while she was protecting her grandson. A 4-month-old was taken from the residence. She was found a short time later in Berkeley County.”
Ravenell concluded, “This is an ongoing investigation and evidence at this time indicates that this was not a random act of violence. We will locate the cowards who entered the residence and snatched an innocent child from their family and later discarded the helpless child on the side of a road.”
The sheriff said his department is continuing to interview witnesses, collect evidence, and will be working with all available resources to bring these individuals back to Orangeburg County to stand for the charges they have committed against this family.
On Tuesday, a driver spotted the baby along S.C. Highway 311 near S.C. 176 some time after 4 p.m.
The area is located in a rural portion of Moncks Corner heading toward the Orangeburg County line.
According to Keisa Peterson, a spokesperson for the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office, they had received a call that a 4-month-old had been kidnapped from a Catamount Road residence in Holly Hill.
While officers were reportedly getting ready to issue an Amber Alert for the child, the communications center was notified that the infant was located in Berkeley County.
Dan Moon, with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, says the suspects were last scene driving in two separate vehicles, a Chevy Impala and green Ford Explorer.
Moon said the parents of the baby girl were notified and left their Orangeburg Co. home to be reunited with their daughter.
