JAMESTOWN, S.C.–On early Monday morning, members of the Berkeley County Rescue Squad recovered the body of a 75-year-old man in Savannah Creek. The body of water is located right by Highway 17A.
The coroner has identified the man as Douglas Beauford of Jamestown.
The rescue squad along with the assistance of the Berkeley Co. Sheriff’s Office and the Jamestown Fire Department began searching for the man around 8 p.m. on Sunday.
Family members say they last saw him earlier in the day and that he was known to take near by walks.
Several hours into the search, the man’s brown hat was located near the creek.
Rescue crew members then lowered a boat into the water to see if the man had fallen in. Within twenty minutes of doing so, crews on scene recovered the man’s body after midnight.
Approximately 50 people assisted with the search with Coroner Bill Salisbury leading the efforts.
It is not known how the man ended up in the creek; however, Salisbury has ruled the man’s death as an accidental drowning.
