MACEDONIA, S.C.–Multiple agencies spent several hours battling a 40 acre brush fire along Highway 17A in the Macedonia community.
According to Moncks Corner Rural Fire Chief, Scott Lee, his department along with Santee Circle Rural Volunteer and the South Carolina Forestry Commission helped to extinguish the flames that threatened about five structures around 3 p.m.
Lee says the fire started after a pickup truck that a tow truck driver was pulling caught on fire and spread to the surrounding area.
The tow truck driver, who wished to remain anonymous, said he was pulling the truck from Cross and taking it to a mechanic shop in Bonneau when he heard a loud noise.
“I heard something, and I looked up in my review mirror and seen smoke on the road. I looked again, and the truck is on fire, he said. “By the time the fire truck got out here it was fully engulfed. The truck basically blew up under the engine.”
Fortunately, Lee says the fire is now under control, and they’ve since handed the scene back over to Santee Circle.
