MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–Berkeley County Sheriff Wayne DeWitt announced Thursday that the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office eearned the honor of becoming a nationally accredited law enforcement agency.
The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., CALEA recognizes agencies like the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office that demonstrate the commitment to excellence in law enforcement. This award is considered a benchmark for professional law enforcement agencies.
Sheriff DeWitt said the CALEA Accreditation award gives the leadership and staff of his office the confidence that they are attentive to the issues that promote professional service and provides assurance that they are focused on the proper activities that strengthen the Office’s overall performance.
There are only 32 other law enforcement agencies in South Carolina and only 626 nationally; and 16 internationally that have earned this prestigious award.
Although the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office was notified of this achievement last August, the official presentation will be made at the Berkeley County Council Meeting on February 10, 2014 at 6:30 pm. Two members of the 21-member CALEA commission: South Carolina Supreme Court Justice John W. Kittredge and The Honorable Edward R. Tallon, Sr. of the S.C. House of Representatives.
Sheriff DeWitt said “Now that we have reached this high standard, we must continue to strive for even higher goals of professionalism to serve the citizens of Berkeley County.”
