MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–Haley Chaplin has been working around the clock prepping for this year’s Relay for Life at Berkeley High School. While organizing such a large event can be stressful at times, she enjoys every minute of it.
“There is not just one thing about Relay for Life that brings me joy. I love that people of all ages come together in the fight against cancer. As a survivor being able to walk around the track with all of the other survivors during the survivor lap is joyful and emotional for all who have battled this disease and won,” stated Chaplin.
Relay For Life is a family friendly event with the one very important goal, helping folks fight cancer and raise money to hopefully one day find a cure.
Hundreds of people in the Moncks Corner community are expected to come together on April 25 to finish the fight against cancer and raise money for the American Cancer Society. Throughout the night there will be a survivor and caregiver lap, luminary ceremony, entertainment, food, games, activities and fun all night long.
“The luminary ceremony is where we honor and remember friends and family and it is very emotional and brings everything we are doing for Relay For Life into perspective,” stated Chaplin.
On Tuesday, Moncks Corner Relay for Life held its first meeting at Santee Cooper’s auditorium. There were about 40 people in attendance.
“The meetings are held to share event related information, for teams to pick up Relay for Life supplies and for teams to share upcoming fundraisers with other teams,” stated Chaplin.
So far for this year 34 teams and 164 participants have registered online for Relay For Life, but Chaplin is hoping for even more.
“We are always looking for people to join Relay For Life as a team, participants, sponsors and would like to get as many survivors as possible in the Moncks Corner community involved,” said Chaplin who has been involved with the American Cancer Society for a little more than three years.
Last year’s event raised $191,000. That money will all go to cancer research. This year, organizers have set their goal even higher–$195,000.
While there is no deadline to register for the upcoming Relay for Life, Chaplin is hoping people will register online as soon as possible so that they can receive event related information and be able to raise money online.
