The Red Cross for the Carolina Lowcountry Chapter has a brand new location. The organization serves Berkeley County as well as several other neighboring counties. Originally located along Rivers Aveune, the new Red Cross location is right by North Charleston city hall at 2424 City Hall Lane. The new location allows the Red Cross to be much closer to I-26 and I-526.
According to organization members, this new location will also benefit volunteers, those taking classes and those needing Red Cross disaster services.
The new building, which was dedicated to long-term Red Cross Supporter and Community Leader Anita Zucker, is designed with amenities to help prepare volunteers and the community before a disaster strikes and to speed recovery afterward. The building allows for more training capacity to teach Red Cross courses such as CPR, First Aid and community preparedness training. It also has a kitchen and shower for prolonged disaster operations.
During the celebration, Red Cross Regional CEO Louise Welch Williams thanked those in the community that give of their time, treasure and blood. Red Cross Board Chair Mason Holland said generous supporters and dedicated volunteers enabled Red Cross to help more than 1,000 people who were affected by disasters in the Lowcountry since January 1.
Local mayors thanked the Red Cross for their vital services to the community including those during the recent winter storm last month. Red Cross mobilized more than 100 volunteers to assist those who were left cold and hungry by wide-spread power outages throughout the Palmetto SC Region. Red Cross opened 29 shelters in the region including 7 in the Lowcountry, and served more than 26,000 meals and snacks conjunction with its partners.
The Carolina Lowcountry Chapter is part of the Palmetto SC Region which is made up of seven Red Cross chapters spanning 35-counties of South Carolina.
Because people in our community gave of their time, treasure and blood, Red Cross was able to help 5,689 people affected by disasters in our region last year , distribute 119,735 units of blood cells to area hospitals, assist 2,653 military families and train 7,569 people in life lifesaving skills last year and the Palmetto SC Region.
