BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Late last month, the Berkeley Co. School Board of Education designated April 21 (which had been a teacher work day) and May 26 (Memorial Day) as make-up instructional time for two of the four days recently missed due to this year’s winter storm.
Many parents were originally outraged, posting to the district’s Facebook page that going to school on Memorial Day “disrespected” veterans and, therefore, they would not be sending their children to school on that day anyway.
The school board apparently heard these parents’ disapproval loud and clear.
Tonight board members agreed to change the school make up days.
The board unanimously approved amending the 2013-14 instructional calendar to accommodate the loss of instructional time so that May 29th becomes a full instructional day for high school students and May 30th becomes a full instructional day for all students. The vote was 7-0.
It also voted 4-to-3 to amend the 2013-14 instructional calendar so that the make-up day that had been approved for May 26th (Memorial Day) is moved to June 2.
This means that schools and offices will be closed for Memorial Day after all.
