JAMESTOWN, S.C.–Here in Berkeley County we tend to do things a little differently. While some competitions give the winners and runner ups a nice golden trophy or plaque, in Jamestown you’ll get a gator head trophy instead. And, yep, we’re serious. They’re actual gator heads.
Organizers for this year’s Hell Hole Swamp festival are gearing up for this year’s big race. The race takes place during the festival, May 3. The Hell Hole Swamp Gator Run & Walk will take place at the intersection of Hwy 41 and 17A in Jamestown.
Registration is $25 online. You can click here to register–doing so may save you up to $10.
Large (actual) gator-head trophies will be given to the M/F overall, masters and grand masters divisions. Smaller gator-head trophies will be given to five-year age group winners, both male and female, ages 10-14 through 74-79.
T-Shirts will be given to each registrant, and medallions will be given to each of the first 200 finishers. Unique art will be used for each from a middle-school art competition and judged by attendees at the Cooper River Bridge Run Expo.
A poem will be composed by the Hell Hole Poet Laureate, who doubles as the Race Director, while the runners are on the course. The six champions will be featured on a float (bed of pick-up truck) in the Hell Hole Swamp Festival Parade, which will be held immediately following the Award Ceremony.
These taxidermied gator heads are purchased from a gator farm in Florida, which would toss them onto a trash heap. Instead, your gator’s head can live in infamy in your trophy case. Their bases are planks from Charleston Heart Pine.
Hell Hole Swamp Festival is scheduled for May 2, 3, and 4. Yeee Haaaww, ya’ll!
