BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Another candidate has announced plans to run for Berkeley County sheriff, seeking the Republican nomination.

According to Matt Smaok, “The time has come for the residents and visitors of Berkeley County to feel safe and secure in their homes, schools and businesses. The time has also come to have a county that will provide the services that so many of us are wanting in our areas.”

Smoak says he has seven years of law enforcement experience from the City of Charleston and approximately seventeen years of experience within public safety, ranging from volunteer rescue, paramedic and law enforcement.

“I have worked in all the counties as an EMT. I am a resident of this ever-so-growing county, Berkeley,” added Smoak.

Current long-time sheriff, Wayne Dewitt, hopes to continue in his position and plans to seek re-election.  He was first elected sheriff back in 1994.

So far, one other candidate has announced his plans to run for Berkeley County sheriff, Lt. Brian Adams with the North Charleston Police Department.

Smoak now makes the second person to toss his hat into the ring.

The election will take place on June 10th.
