BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. –Solicitor Scarlett Wilson announced today that a Berkeley County jury found defendant, Joseph Mack guilty of three counts of strong armed robbery and one count of failure to stop for a blue light Monday.
Circuit Court Judge Carmen Mullen sentenced Mack to the maximum fifteen years for each of the three strong armed robbery offenses and then ran a three year sentence for failure to stop for a blue light consecutively, totaling eighteen years.
According to Wilson’s office, three victims, all long distance truck drivers, were preparing for a haul in a truck yard in Hanahan during the evening hours of January 6, 2013, when they were approached by the defendant. He demanded money, jewelry, and other personal possessions before fleeing in his pickup truck.
Officers with Hanahan Police Department responded quickly to the 911 call and attempted to stop Mack as he fled the scene. Although signaled by lights and sirens from at least three police cars, Mack refused to stop and led the officers on a mile long chase, ending by crashing into a mobile home.
While he fled, Mack threw the stolen goods out of the car window, which officers were able to locate by walking the path that the pursuit had taken. All of the victims’ stolen property was recovered and returned to them. Two of the victims were able to identify Mack as the person who had robbed them that same evening.
Assistant Solicitor Colleen E. Taylor said, “The victims will always be affected by this incident, but we are glad that we were able to take a dangerous man off the streets to give them some peace of mind.”
The case was prosecuted by Taylor and Assistant Solicitor Charles Condon.
