MONCKS CORNER, S.C.—Every year, the Berkeley Co. Rescue Squad answers dozens of calls,
including but not limited to water rescues, land searches and traffic accidents.
“The rescue squad is an all volunteer organization. We don’t charge a fee for our services,” said Bill Salisbury, who is not only the chief of the squad but also the county coroner.
In order to provide its services to the community, the rescue squad relies heavily on donations. On April 26th the squad will host its biggest fundraising event, the 21st annual Moncks Corner Medical Family Open Catfish Tournament.
“This fundraiser is a very big part of our budget,” stressed Salisbury.
The money raised will go toward purchasing new equipment, maintaining current equipment and daily
operations of the squad.
The event will take place at the Dennis Boat Landing, which is across from Gilligan’s Restaurant in Moncks Corner. This year the person who catches the biggest catfish will drive away with a very large prize.
“This year we have a used, but not abused, truck donated and the largest catfish, no matter the size, will
take home the truck,” said Salisbury. “This year first prize is $1,000, second prize is $750 and third prize is $500, and we will go right on down to ten prizes.”
The event is $75 for pre-registration and $95 on the day of the tournament. Registration is per boat.
If taking part in the tournament isn’t your thing, people at the landing can still take part in some great raffle prizes.
“You can buy tickets the day of the tournament or win one from this year’s partner Kickin’ 92.5 on one of their morning shows, but you must be present to win,” he said.
Last year’s raffle prizes included a rocking chair, cooler, fishing rod, tires and much more.
“This is a family friendly event and application can be found at local tackle shops or at the rescue squad’s website,” Salisbury said.
