HANAHAN, S.C.—According to Lt. Michael Fowler with Hanahan Police, a North Charleston man is recovering in the hospital after a roof collapsed on him.
Fowler says the man was airlifted to MUSC and was conscious when placed inside the chopper. He reportedly received some leg and head injuries. A neighbor says the man’s injuries are not life threatening.
Fowler says ever since Mike Cochran became chief of police, his department has been partnering with code enforcement, making it a mission to clean up abandoned, dilapidated homes.
The home where Thursday’s accident occurred at 6029B Tampa Street was one of the locations deemed an eyesore.
Police say back in October, a building inspector condemned the house as unsafe for occupancy. The homeowner was then issued a demo permit.
Fowler says the permit didn’t expire for another few weeks.
The homeowner and several friends reportedly tried to clear out the house themselves when the accident occurred. Fowler says he isn’t sure what caused the roof to collapse on the homeowner.
Police say there are about three other properties within Hanahan that are deemed eyesores that they are working to clear out.
