GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–Goose Creek Bike-A-Thon coordinator, Chief Harvey Becker of the Goose Creek Police Department, announced today that the Goose Creek Police Cadets, Explorer Post 400, will participate in the Saturday, April 12th, “Making a Difference for St. Jude” Bike-A-Thon. The event will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the lake and hiker-biker trail behind Goose Creek City Hall.
The coordinator of the police cadets, Lieutenant Shelly Ollic, advised Becker that the cadets will support this cause by riding, as well as sponsoring riders in the Bike-A-Thon.
Police cadets, excited about the Bike-A-Thon that benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, are determined to make this ride a community party. “The general plan is to have a good time while helping a wonderful group of children and families counting on our support,” Becker said. “Our police cadets share the dream of the hospital’s founder, the late Danny Thomas, that ‘no child should have to die of cancer or other catastrophic diseases,’” he said.
Since the hospital opened in 1962 close to one hundred and fifty children and families from South Carolina have received treatment from St. Jude. Currently, more than forty children from South Carolina are receiving treatment from St. Jude.
Riders who raise $35 will receive a St. Jude T-shirt. Those who raise $75 will receive a St. Jude Sling Tote. Riders who raise $150 or more receive a St. Jude On-the-Go Blanket. Prizes are cumulative. “The real prize, though, is the pride everyone can take in giving children a chance to live a normal life,” Becker said.
Sponsor forms are available at the Goose Creek Police Department. For more information on riding or sponsoring a rider, call the Goose Creek Police Department at 863-5200, ext. 2309.
