On Friday, Dennis Lott, 56, of Goose Creek faced a judge in bond court.
After his arrest in Walterboro, Lott’s initial bond hearing was postponed for several days after Charleston County deputies say Lott was undergoing a mental evaluation.
Lott is accused of stealing approximately $190,000 from the Coastal Carolina Fair and is charged with breach of trust and drawing a fraudulent check.
According to The Post & Courier, Lott’s attorney, Scott Bischoff of Charleston, told Judge Alvin Bligen that Lott did not steal money.
“He used that to make sure his family could stay in their home,” he’s quoted as saying in the paper. “Somebody authorized him to borrow the money.”
According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Lott’s house in Goose Creek was in foreclosure and he wrote a check to himself from the fair’s account last July to buy it back.
Bligen set Lott’s bond at $21,000.
