GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–The heated mayoral race between incumbent Michael Heitzler and challenger Jerry Tekac has generated a massive turnout at the polls. Voters will also determine three council seats.
Since noon, parking has been limited around city hall, and the lines have stretched out the door as voters patiently wait to cast their ballots.
As of 3:00 p.m., poll workers say about 1,600 people have voted in Tuesday’s election. One longtime poll worker says they’ve actually been busier with this election than they have in past U.S. presidential elections.
Despite the long lines, the wait has been minimal, and there have been no problems reported.
The polls officially close at 7 p.m. with the counting of the ballots following immediately after.
The Berkeley Observer will post the election results as soon as they come in tonight.
