MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–Solicitor Scarlett A. Wilson announced that a Berkeley County jury found 30 year old Barry Stanley
guilty of Trafficking Cocaine Base and Failure to Stop for a Blue Light on Wednesday after two days of trial.
It was the defendant’s sixth drug offense in fifteen years. Additionally, Wilson says Stanley has convictions for assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, simple assault and resisting arrest. Judge Kristi Lea Harrington sentenced Stanley to the maximum thirty years for trafficking cocaine base and three years on Failure to stop for a blue light.
The minimum sentence for the trafficking charge was 25 years, due to Stanley’s prior record. The sentences will run consecutively for a total of 33 years. The defendant will have to serve 85% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
Hanahan Police Department was initially called to 6240 Old Pont Rd on March 11, 2013, at 5:00 p.m. in response to an assault involving the defendant and his girlfriend, Evette Nelson. After the defendant assaulted her, Nelson ran to a neighbor’s house screaming that the defendant was trying to kill her. Two small children aged 11 months and two years old were left in the home.
By the time officers arrived, defendant Stanley had fled the scene. He was quickly identified as he drove away from the scene. He led police on a high speed chase for twelve miles along several busy roads in Hanahan, North Charleston and Charleston during rush hour, eventually hitting another vehicle on Rivers Avenue.
During the chase, citizens saw the defendant throw a plastic bag from the car window. These independent and uninvolved witnesses retrieved the bag and turned it over to officers. Testing revealed it contained 29 grams of cocaine.
Stanley avoided arrest for seven days, hiding on Wadmalaw Island where he was finally apprehended. Assistant Solicitor, Michael Patterson expressed gratitude for the hard work of the Hanahan Police Department that led to the conviction of this repeat offender.
Nelson was later charged with Unlawful Conduct Towards a Child when traces of cocaine were found in the home’s microwave and the two young children tested positive for cocaine. She pled guilty in March of 2013 and testified in the trial against Stanley.
Solicitor Wilson noted, “once again we have seen that when our community is willing to work with law enforcement, we can get good results. Without solid citizens stepping up and getting involved by finding the cocaine the Stanley tossed and turning it over to law enforcement, it is unlikely we would have been able to prove the trafficking case. This is a win for the entire community.”
The case was prosecuted by Patterson and Assistant. Solicitor Charles Condon.
