SOUTH CAROLINA–With the recent decision in Colorado and Washington to legalize marijuana, residents of other other states have begun asking the question: should we do the same?
According to a recent Winthrop poll, nearly 40% of South Carolina residents think that pot should be made legal for personal use among adults.
Radio personality Bryan Crabtree, on his show, asked Former SC District 42 Senate Candidate Alex Thorton if she agreed with these findings.
“Yes,” she stated. “Our personal liberties have been chipped away…and it’s time to start reversing that.” Ms. Thorton went onto say, “It’s very logical to go ahead and decriminalize marijuana.”
She also argued that the economics of pot legalization make sense, as “it will make the state millions and millions of dollars.” Ultimately, Thorton said, “We will save the taxpayers money [by making the drug legal].”
But what of the slippery slope argument that states if pot is legal, then all drugs should be legal? Ms. Thorton does not refute that argument, but rather stated, “Let’s see where we can have that argument rather than…all of this being illegal.”
According to Ms. Thorton, marijuana is not a gateway drug, but our perception of it currently is because it is sold by the same drug dealers who hold access to more serious drugs, such as heroine and meth. “[Drug dealers] are entrepreneurs. They want to upsell,” she said. “If we could get it from a pharmacy, if we could grow it in our backyards…we would put so many drug dealers out of business because that’s what they primarily sell.”
Ultimately, Ms. Thorton, who is considering running for office again, stressed knowledge about the drug and its effects: she urges people to discuss the dangers of driving under the influence of marijuana, just as they would with alcohol.
“That’s something I’d like to see South Carolina rise up and do. What if we opened up this conversation about how to be safe with it?” she added.
