BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Ralph Lewis Cooper, Jr., 49, a resident of Berkeley County, was arrested Monday on income tax charges.
SC Department of Revenue (DOR) investigators charged Cooper with four counts of attempting to evade or defeat taxes. He is being held at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center in Berkeley County SC pending a bond hearing.
For tax years 2008 through 2011, the DOR investigation showed Cooper falsified the earning statements of another person to indicate that the individual was exempt from withholding taxes.
As a result of Cooper’s actions, there was little or no withholding taxes withheld from the other person’s pay during tax years 2008 through 2011. The total outstanding liability for 2008 through 2011 is $16,430.
Cooper faces a fine of $40,000 or 20 years of imprisonment, or both.
