BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Berkeley County officials announced this morning plans to detour traffic and restore water to residents and businesses after yesterday’s bridge collapse on Cypress Gardens Road. According to
Berkeley County Supervisor Dan Davis, the county is working closely with state engineers and the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) to quickly alleviate the inconveniences the situation has caused for area residents, businesses and Bushy Park industries.
A break in a major water main has left the entire area without potable water. Engineers are exploring the possibility of spanning the bridge with a temporary water pipe, which could restore water within a day or so, as crews continue to work on a permanent fix.
The SCDOT is also setting up a detour, which will divert traffic around Bushy Park via Hwy 52 and Redbank Road. Traffic lights throughout the city of Goose Creek will be adjusted accordingly to accommodate increased traffic and ease congestion.
“Berkeley County and the SCDOT are taking emergency measures to restore the bridge,” says Davis. “The collapse was pretty significant and will take time to rebuild.”
According to Davis, officials are exploring the possibility of acquiring an emergency bridge, which is currently being used in the upstate. This temporary structure would allow traffic through the area while a new span is being built. Additionally, the SCDOT has plans to request that Governor Nikki Haley sign an emergency declaration which would shorten the procurement time required to design and build a new structure.
“Bottom line, Berkeley County and the SCDOT have made this a top priority,” says Davis. “We are exploring every possible option to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.”
