BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The South Carolina Department of Education has announced that 20 Berkeley County School District (BCSD) schools have earned Palmetto Gold or Silver awards for the 2013-14 school year. One school earned awards for more than one grade level category, and one school earned gold awards for both general performance and closing the achievement gap.
“I am incredibly proud of our 2013-14 Palmetto Gold and Silver award recipients,” stated Dr. Rodney Thompson, superintendent. “This distinction is a tangible reflection of the hard work and commitment to academic excellence happening throughout the year at each of these schools.”
Daniel Island School earned distinction for general performance for its elementary grades and for both general performance and closing the achievement gap for its middle school grades. Of the district’s other award recipients, 12 schools were recognized for general performance only, one (Cross High) was recognized for closing the achievement gap only, and six schools were recognized for their performance in both general performance and closing the achievement gap. Hanahan High was one of only 68 schools across the state to earn a gold award in both general performance and closing the achievement gap.
About the Palmetto Gold and Silver Program
Established in 1998, the Palmetto Gold and Silver Awards (PGS) program gives recognition to schools for attaining high levels of absolute performance, high rates of growth, and substantial progress in closing the achievement gap between all groups. The program reviews criteria such as State School Report Card ratings, test scores, attendance, graduation rates and continuous achievement when selecting award recipients.
Schools can earn the coveted distinction in the category of “Performance,” “Closing the Achievement Gap,” or both. This year, the South Carolina Department of Education recognized 592 schools and career centers for general performance, closing the achievement gap, or qualifying in both categories.
