DANIEL ISLAND–Officials with the Berkeley Co. School District and McMilan Pazdah Smith architecture recently held a community meeting on Daniel Island, updating parents on the new high school that will serve both the Cainhoy and Daniel Island communities.
The new high school will be built on the Cainhoy Plantation, which is near Clements Ferry Road, and will be named after the plantation.
According to the planners, “the intention is to make larger buildings look smaller by breaking down to scale, and to create a pedestrian scaled street-scape environment on the sidewalks and streets between buildings and groups of buildings.”
This design will feature a full sized gymnasium with an auxiliary gym, a 1,000 seat theater, a health and science academy, a STEM facility, outdoor learning facility and a hospitality academy. The rest of the campus will include parking for both students (600 spaces) and faculty (100 spaces) and a variety of sports fields.
Construction is expected to start taking place next year, and should be completed by the start of the 2017 school year. Upon opening in 2017, the school is expected to have around 700 students, but the school will have a capacity for 1,200 students with alternates for expansion.
The new school is expected to cost a little more than $63 million.
