With the start of the hurricane season nearly upon us, Governor Nikki Haley has begun the state’s preparations by running several interactive exercises with South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD) and the South Carolina Emergency Response Team (SERT). The exercises allowed for those participating to run different scenarios in order to be fully prepared in the event that a hurricane does strike the South Carolina coast this season.
“Every year we do this hurricane exercise with state agencies to make sure that we are ready, and every year we have made it more extensive, and have added another layer,” said Gov. Haley. “As always, South Carolina is ready and prepared for the upcoming hurricane season and the real-time scenarios that we ran through today are a major reason why we can say that. Today was about doing everything we can to keep our citizens safe.”
South Carolina’s hurricane preparation and emergency readiness requires a multi-pronged approach, which was a consideration during the tabletop exercises. Maj. Gen. Robert E. Livingston, Jr., the Adjutant General for South Carolina, said, “It’s about being able to assist the counties and first responders, enabling them to prepare their residents and provide necessary assistance from the onset of a weather event through the recovery phase.”
The tabletop exercises are just the first in Governor Haley’s yearly hurricane preparations. The Governer, SCEMD, and SERT will follow this smaller exercise with a full-scale, state-wide preparation exercise during the first week of June. June 1-7 marks South Carolina Hurricane Awareness Week; it is also the first week in the hurricane season, which runs through November.
