With over 2.5 million American affected by it, 1.75 million emergency room visits because of it, and 456,000 hospitalizations each year, severe asthma is a major health issue.
Trident Health and Lowcountry Lung and Critical Care have joined together to bring a long-term option for relief to adult sufferers of asthma. By removing excess smooth muscle tissue in the patient’s airway, Bronchial Thermoplasty (BT) has reduced adult asthma attacks by 44% and E.R. visits by 84% in clinical trials. Additionally, test subjects showed a 66% decrease in missed school and work days. The procedure is done through three outpatient visits, which are spaced out over six weeks.
This procedure has the potential to completely change adult asthma sufferers’ lives. Dr. John M. Rucker of Lowcountry Lung & Critical Care in North Charleston treats many patients with severe asthma and understands their struggles and limitations. “They become prisoners to their disease,” he said. “For the right patient, the change in lifestyle [as a result of this procedure] can be amazing.”
Trident Health is holding a free information session about BT; anyone suffering from asthma is welcome to talk with Dr. Rucker about the procedure. The session will be held on Wednesday, May 21 at 11:30 a.m. at Trident Medical Center. For your free registration, please call 843-797-3463.
