According to AAA, 13 people died on South Carolina roadways over the Memorial Day weekend last year, making it the deadliest Memorial Day in six years.
Despite a 22 cent increase per gallon in gas prices during this time, AAA says it obviously didn’t keep drivers off the roads. Now this year they predict more than 450,000 South Carolinians will travel by car this holiday. This is reportedly 1.8% increase last year, and the highest number in nine years.
As the holiday approaches, AAA is sending out a few friendly reminders.
“Holiday trips are about getting away, and it is not a time to become stressed behind-the-wheel,” said David E. Parsons, president and CEO of AAA Carolinas. “Relax by making sure your car is ready for the trip, be mentally prepared for traffic delays you may encounter on the way to your destination and take a rest break every couple of hours to remain mentally alert.” AAA Carolinas recommends regular maintenance for your car, which is susceptible to additional problems after the harsh winter; car batteries can be weakened by the cold, an issue that will only be exacerbated by the expected 90-degree temperatures this Memorial Day weekend.
The Memorial Day holiday also begins the 100 Deadliest Days for Teens. Parents of teen drivers are encouraged to talk with their teens about texting and driving, as well as how to avoid other distractions. 16- to 19-year olds are five times more likely to be in a fatal crash when other teens are present in the car.
Throughout the Memorial Day holiday, traffic is likely to be heaviest on Friday afternoon and evening, and on Monday afternoon; AAA Carolinas recommends that drivers on the road at these times use extra caution.
