BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The Berkeley Co. School District has approved May 30th as the last full day of school for students. The decision came after the final passing of House Bill 5253. Today, Governor Nikki Haley signed it into law.
House Bill 5253 allows for the BCSD’s governing authority to waive the requirement that schools make up full days missed due to inclement weather for five or fewer missed days–regardless of whether the district has exhausted all statutorily required make-up days.
A half day of school on Monday, June 2 was previously added to BCSD’s instructional calendar due to a state law requiring districts to use the three make-up days for inclement weather built into their school calendars before missed days can be waived.
“Meeting this requirement meant that this half day be scheduled after and during high school graduations; it involved great expense to the district including the costs associated with serving meals and operating buses,” stated BCSD spokesperson Susan Haire.
The schedule for employees has not changed.
BCSD schools offering summer day care will be offering programming beginning Monday. Parents interested in this option are asked to contact their children’s respective schools on or before Friday.
