South Carolina’s recycling rate increases for the fourth consecutive year

Local governments and businesses have been working hard to recover all recyclable waste and it has been paying off.  For the fourth year in a row, the state of South Carolina’s recycling rate has increased. This time, it has risen from 29.5 percent to 31.5 percent.

Kent Coleman, direction of DHEC’s Division of Mining and Solid Waste Management, said, “Recycling is a way of life for more and more residents and businesses that understand the environmental and economic benefits of this simple action.”

Recycling is great for our environment. It saves energy and prevents pollution, along with helping not to fill our landfills with reusable items. Each South Carolinian recycled on average 1.59 pounds per day, compared to 1.44 pounds per day from last year. That should make each of us proud.

“We’re doing well, but we need to improve,” Coleman went on. “We’re still sending about 70 percent of our waste to landfills–much of which could have been recycled by businesses that need the material.”
