Clemson University’s Extension Service to offer day camps for kids

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Kids spend all school year waiting and wishing for summer vacation, but after the first couple of weeks, most parents usually hear is, “I’m bored!” If your child is in need of a fun summer activity, Clemson University’s Extension Service in Moncks Corner is offering various day camps throughout the summer.

For children ages 9-13, a Healthy Lifestyles Day Camp will be hosted at St. Stephen at the American Legion Hut (180 Ravenell Drive) on July 1. This day camp features games about nutrition, fun physical activities, as well as preparation of healthy snacks and simple recipes. This is great information for any child to have and the cost to participate is only $5.

A second day camp called “Kids Can It!” will be hosted for youth aged 12-16 at Centenary United Methodist Church (1837 Old Hwy. 52) on August 5. During this day camp, young adults will learn how to preserve foods with the current USDA methods for freezing, pickling, and jams/jellies. The cost to participate is $25.

A two-day “Kids Can It” day camp will be hosted at the Dorchester County Extension Office (201 Johnston Street in St. George) on July 22-23. The cost is $30 and is open to youth aged 12-16. For more information about this and other programs, contact the Berkeley County Extension Office.

Does your young one have a competitive side? Tri-county 4-H programs are also working to recruit 4-H Healthy Lifestyles Teams to train for local, regional, and state competitions in the fall. Your child will learn even more about nutrition, food safety and preparation, shopping skills, and menu planning–all of which are indispensable skills when he or she gets older. This program is open to children and young adults in grades 3-12 and each team consists of 3-4 members.

If you or your child is interested, contact the Berkeley County Extension Office at 719-4140 or [email protected].

Although kids are on summer break, there is no need for them to sit around and quit learning!

These programs are here to help your child have a fun and productive summer vacation.
