BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.– During the July 4th weekend, many South Carolina citizens will will be throwing parties, fishing, watching fireworks and going out on the water.
In an effort to keep state citizens safe on the water, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) will be conducting courtesy safety inspections at boat landings during the holiday weekend and throughout the month.
DNR officials say they will be conducting thorough and timely inspections, making sure boaters have the required safety equipment and boat and motor registration.
However, instead of ticketing those boaters not in compliance with the proper safety regulations, the department will allow the boat owner to correct the infraction before they launch their boats.
DNR will also be available to answer any boat safety questions as well as give tips for proper safety measures.
If you would like to get ahead of the boating inspections, contact DNR boating safety office toll free at 1-800-277-4301, the office will be glad to provide you with a copy of South Carolina’s boating regulations, to find out about local boating safety courses or obtain a free float plan form.
Boaters can also expect to see much more traffic on the water this year. The South Carolina’s general assembly has also designated July 4th ‘Free Fishing Day.’ This allows all South Carolina residents to fish in freshwater while following all the proper regulations without a license.
If you see any boating violations, such as, reckless operations or an intoxicated boat operator, you can call DNR 24 hours a day, toll free, at 1-800-922-5431.
