Letter to the Editor: Update from Lt. Gov. Yancey McGill

Open letter from Lt. Governor Yancey McGill:

As you know by now, on June 18th, I was elected President Pro Tempore of the South Carolina Senate. Shortly thereafter, I was unanimously elected Lieutenant Governor and sworn in by the Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court. This is quite a privilege, and not one that I take lightly.

Stepping up to take the position of Lieutenant Governor was not a move I made lightly. The twenty-six years I spent as your State Senator was a privilege and an honor, and it was more rewarding and fulfilling than I could ever have imagined.

My service as your Senator was a team effort throughout the five county area that comprises Senate District 32. We worked together to improve the quality of life for all citizens, and I could not have done it without your cooperation and support. There are many, many things we accomplished that I could list here, but I will mention just a few that I believe will go forward as a testament to our cooperative service:

• $50 million in new water and sewer lines for residential, commercial and industrial development
• $15 million in resurfaced streets
• $4 million in airport construction
• $6.5 million for new senior centers
• New libraries and improved recreational facilities throughout the district
• $6 million for new and improved health complexes
• Improvements to the Williamsburg Regional Hospital
• $1 billion for new highway construction
• $1 billion in capital investment and thousands of jobs
• Over $33 million in capital improvement funds for education, including the recently approved $750,000 for a Facilities Complex for Williamsburg Technical College
• $18 million for dredging the Port of Georgetown, which will be an economic boost for our region and the State.

My father taught me from an early age that public service, in whatever form it may take, was an obligation and a privilege. He made this commitment at a young age, when he lost his two older brothers in World War II and a brother-in-law in the Korean War. He was an outstanding public servant, and I have always hoped that my service would have made him proud. More importantly, I hope that it has provided a better life and a brighter future for my fellow citizens.

The progress we have made is not over. We must all continue to work together to protect what we have accomplished, and to keep building on those accomplishments. There will be many who will represent our area in the future years, and

I urge you to do your part to support them as they represent you in the South Carolina Senate.

I thank you for the privilege of serving as your Senator. It has meant more to me than words could ever express.
