BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – In Berkeley County, deer hunting is king. In anticipation of the upcoming season, The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) plans to open its application process for deer lottery hunts on public land, beginning July 1 to August 15.
This year’s lottery will be a little different. DNR has gone paperless, so applicants will only be able to apply and pay online to be eligible.
Applicants will be able to select a “non-draw” option that will allow them to apply and acquire a preference point, but will not be considered for selection. The Resident Temporary Wildlife Management Are permit that has been offered to all lottery hunters in past lotteries will now only be offered for the half day hunts (waterfowl and turkey).
Those who are selected for the hunts must have regular Wildlife Management Permit at they time of the hunt. The permit is included in the Sportsman License, Junior Sportsman License and Gratis-over 64 License. Anyone under the age of 16, is not required to have a license.
The primary applicant of the lottery applications will be notified by the mail if they have been selected or not with team members listed. E-mail notifications are available, and encouraged, for the deer hunts.
E-mail notification may be available for the deer hunts. DNR encourages applicants to use the e-mail notification option to minimize agency postage.

The waterfowl/quail lottery will be available mid September, and turkey lottery will begin in late January.
