BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Fruit of the Loom announced today plans to expand the company’s Berkeley County distribution center. The addition will add 402,000 square feet to the current 350,000-square-foot building, more than doubling its size.
“We could not be more excited to announce the expansion of our Summerville distribution center,” said Rick Medlin, president and CEO of Fruit of the Loom. “As our e-commerce and intimates businesses continue to grow, we are committed to strategically developing state-of-the-art systems and facilities to better service our customers. The location of the current Summerville facility coupled with our dedicated workforce there make it the ideal place to grow.”
The expansion is expected to create 49 new jobs by 2016 and will primarily help service Fruit of the Loom’s growing e-commerce and intimates businesses.
“We are thrilled Fruit of the Loom has chosen our state and their Palmetto Distribution Center for this project,” said Governor Nikki Haley.
Fruit of the Loom, an independent, wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., currently is proceeding with the regulatory requirements necessary to move forward with the project. It expects to break ground on the expansion in September 2014 and be completed by August 2015.
“It’s always exciting to recruit new businesses to our community. Even more rewarding is being able to see companies that have located in Berkeley County grow, prosper and expand after being an integral part of our pro-business environment. We are delighted to have Fruit of The Loom continue to grow in our County and region,” said Dan Davis, Berkeley County supervisor
The building, located at 1116 Business Park Road in Summerville, S.C., will remain a landfill-free operation and is expected to be LEED certified.
