He played Forrest Gump’s commanding officer during the Vietnam War and later became his shrimp boat partner and best friend, too. Now the actor who made the character of Lt. Dan so famous is returning to the lowcountry to raise money for wounded veterans.
Gary Sinise is inviting hundreds of injured veterans and their caregivers to see the actor and his Lt Dan band play at the North Charleston Coliseum on September 20th, 2014.
In addition to the concert, the veterans will participate in various activities such as, adaptive biking, art therapy, kayaking, fishing, yoga, and various other educational and therapeutic sessions to help heal their minds, bodies, and spirits.
Open to the public, the weekend also includes a benefit 5k run, a bike ride, and a Military Health and Wellness Expo showcasing adaptive equipment and technology.
The Independence Fund is offering tickets to the Lt. Dan Concert event at a special “2 for 1” rate until July 7th.
“We really want the public to come out. Community involvement is so important.” said LDW5 co-director, Blair Hughes. “We want these veterans to know that America continues to support them when they return home injured, just as we did when they were deployed. The Independence Fund embodies that message. This event provides us the opportunity to say thank you, as well as, to raise funds to continue our mission of providing the tools, therapies and guidance that our severely injured veterans may otherwise not be receiving.”
To date, the Independence Fund distributed more than $11 million in goods and services to some of the nation’s most severely injured Veterans. One of the most successful has been the all-terrain wheelchair initiative championed by popular Fox News personality and best-selling author, Bill O’Reilly. Providing these specialize chairs gives severely injured veterans the independence of mobility.
