MONCKS CORNER, S.C.—Like many people, Shannon Johnson always enjoys a good bargain. After losing her job in 2009, spending her money wisely became even more important than ever before.
“I had to learn a whole new way of shopping,” Johnson added.
It was during this time, Johnson took up couponing. In no time, she easily began reducing her grocery bill, saving her hundreds of dollars a month. Her savings then inspired her to launch a coupon blog to help other people save money, too.
“I started Coupon Savings in the South on a free site known as Blogger,” Johnson explained. “I was sharing deals I purchased using coupons. A few years ago I switched over to a paid WordPress site.”
According to the latest survey on coupons, shoppers saved nearly $5 billion with coupons in 2011–$500 million more than the previous year.
For Johnson, couponing came easy but blogging about it not so much. It was something she learned entirely on her own.
“Reading and more reading is basically how I started out using a blog. I networked with a lot of other bloggers,” Johnson said. “Money does not necessarily come easy with blogging. Deal blogging is not a get rich job. You work 7 days a week /24 hours a day.”
Before too long, Johnson’s blog had created a massive following. To date, her coupon site’s Facebook page has close to 18,000 fans. Every month, about 43,000 people also visit the site.
Believe it or not, Johnson says she isn’t surprised by her coupon site’s popularity.
“I wasn’t shocked at all. I worked really hard to get my fan base where it is today,” Johnson stated. “I have a huge south eastern fan base.”
While the Internet is inundated with coupon sites, Johnson says hers is a little different.
“I do not post coupon match ups,” Johnson stated.
However, her site does include plenty of printable coupons—and much more.
“I will post deals on places to travel. I give tips on ways to save money on traveling. I also post travel deal reviews,” she said. “I run a lot of giveaways on my site. I love cooking and often share recipes, too.”
Since the success of her coupon site, she’s since launched a second blog called Everyday Southern Living.
“It’s more of a lifestyle blog of crafts, recipes, travel,” she said.
Johnson attributes much of her coupon site’s success to social media.
“Social media is very powerful,” she added.
And as her two sites continue to grow, she says she’ll continue to blog.
“I will blog until I am unable to work my sites,” said Johnson.
As for her next goal in life—she says it’s to travel to California and walk the red carpet for a Disney premiere.
