BONNEAU, S.C.—The scorching weather didn’t stop hundreds of eager boaters from taking part in this year’s Coonfest on Saturday. They came out in full force this weekend—and a few even came from out of town.
The event attracted several hundred boats. Folks got to mingle with other boaters while listening to live music provided by the Corbitt Brother’s Band as well as enjoy some good food cooked by the Shriners. The proceeds from the food will go to local children’s hospitals.
Despite the large crowd in attendance, things were relatively calm on Lake Moultrie. The Berkeley County Rescue Squad, Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office and DNR all had boats patrolling the waters throughout the event.
This was the sixth year for the event, and organizers are hoping to make next year’s Coonfest even bigger and better than this year.
Iain Hamilton says he started Coonfest during a time when Berkeley County was struggling economically and Lake Moultrie appeared to be drying up.
Hamilton says most of the funds generated from the event go right back into the local economy by way of charity.
