HANAHAN, S.C.–Recently, Hanahan Mayor Minnie Newman-Blackwell thanked Moncks Corner Mayor Bill Peagler for helping arrange a meeting with a CSX representative to discuss the future of the Railroad Avenue extension project.

“We have been working diligently for well over a decade towards the completion of this very important project and your direct efforts have given movement to this project where there was none,” Hananah Mayor Minnie Newman-Blackwell wrote in a letter to Peagler.

On November 4, 2008, voters passed a one percent sales tax to help improve highways, roads, bridges, and other transportation-related project facilities in Berkeley County. The Railroad Avenue extension project in Hanahan is one of the projects slated for some major improvements.

The project will extend Railroad Avenue from Mabeline Lodge Road to Eagle Landing Boulevard and include a two lane roadway with bicycle and pedestrian facilities on one side of the road. The other side of the roadway will parallel the railroad track which will be separated by a physical barrier.

However, county leaders say the project faces obstacles due to the “inflexibility” of CSX regarding the design and permitting of the embankment inside the Railroad’s right of way.

According to Newman-Blackwell, Hanahan city leaders are currently in the process of setting up another meeting in Jacksonville with representatives from CSX to hopefully come up with a solution that will make both parties happy.

“We are hopeful that as a direct result of your efforts and continued support, we will get this project moving towards a successful completion,” she wrote to Peagler.

Peagler will become the new supervisor for Berkeley County early next year.
