The Department of Defense recently announced the death of a soldier was bravely supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
Officials stated that Staff Sgt. Girard D. Gass Jr., of Lumber Bridge, North Carolina, died Aug. 3, in Jalalabad Air Field Hospital, Afghanistan, from a non-combat related incident while on patrol that occurred in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan.
Gass, originally from Hanahan, was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
He is a 1999 graduate of Hanahan High School. According to friends, he was also a lineman for the high school’s football team.
Gass enlisted in the U.S Army in 2008 under the Special Forces Enlistment Option.
During his time in the military, Grass received numerous awards and decorations including the Bronze Star medal, Army Achievement Medal and National Defense Service Medal.
