GOOSE CREEK, S.C.—Goose Creek firefighters are banding together to help one of their own in a tough battle against stage four cancer.
“Steve is a selfless caring person. He gives of himself more than anyone I know and expects nothing in return,” stated Captain Warren Adair, one of the organizers of the event. “His family and friends always come first. We have been friends for over 20 years.”
Steve “Skip” Skipton was an EMT in Camden City, New Jersey for 15 years as well as a first responder at 9/11 in New York City before moving to South Carolina to work for the City of Goose Creek Fire Department.
Because of his illness, he’s currently not able to work. As you can imagine, his medical bills are mounting. However, his fellow co-workers have been working hard to help him care for his family and pay for his medical expenses. After all, it’s what firefighters do when one of their own faces hardships.
“It’s a brotherhood that not many understand. Firefighters share a connection with each other through a passion for the job. It’s hard for civilians to comprehend the things we see over a career, and we as firefighters understand that and each other,” added Adair.
In order to make this upcoming event a success, organizers are looking to the community for support.
“Receiving the support of the community in return translates to a ‘thank you’ that is very seldom heard,” stated Adair.
On October 27th, the very first ‘Take A Swing For Skip’ will take place at the Crowfield Golf Club in Goose Creek.
Advanced registration is $75 per person or $250 per team. After October 7th, registration goes up to $85 per person or $300 per team.
Applications are due by October 22nd.
You can download the application by clicking here.
The event will also feature lunch, a buffet dinner, an auction and pre-event grab bag.
