BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.—The ALS bucket challenge has taken the nation by storm in just the past two weeks.
According to the ALS Association, everyone from Ethel Kennedy to Justin Timberlake has poured a bucket of ice water over his or her head and challenged others do the same or make a donation to fight ALS within twenty-four hours.
On Friday, Berkeley Intermediate took the bucket challenge to a whole new level. Principal Mike Shaw and 22 teachers all took the challenge—many screaming and shivering as soon as they came in contact with the ice water.
Prior to each teacher braving the contents inside each bucket, they all challenged schools in Berkeley Co. to do the same.
As of today, the ALS Association has raised more than $62 million to help fund research efforts in finding new treatments and a cure for the disease.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), more commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that destroys a person’s ability to control his or her muscle movement. Overtime, a person will become completely paralyzed.
Every day, an average of 15 people are newly diagnosed with ALS — more than 5,600 people per year.
