GOOSE CREEK, S.C.—After a courageous battle against cancer, Stephen “Skip” Skipton Sr. is now at peace. The dedicated firefighter, father, husband and friend lost his battle against the disease Saturday evening.
For those who had the pleasure of knowing him, to say he will be missed is an understatement. After receiving the devastating news of his passing, friends quickly took to social media to remember a man who touched many lives during his short time here on earth.
“Steve was always a hard worker—never one to ever complain about a busy day,” stated Dominick Pitera on Facebook. “During my time as the A-Team Chief, Steve was one that I could depend on to get things done. There were many times that I was going to give a detail to another truck, and he always would step up and say he and his partner would take care of it.”
Skipton was an EMT in Camden City for 15 years as well as a first responder at 9/11 before moving to South Carolina to work for the Goose Creek Fire Department. According to friends, he was a man who made friends easily and left a lasting impression on the many people he encountered throughout his life.
“Steve, you have made more of an impact on me than you think or even know!!” stated Danno McGlinsey of New Jersey. “I had hid behind my pride and cried several tears to myself just thinking about you, your family, your girls, and your boys!! I hope you continuously know what an example of a man you have been to everyone!! I love you!!!”
Skipton was co-owner of the popular website, SConFire.com. Shortly after his passing his friend and partner issued a statement on the loss of a man who”ll be deeply missed.
“We lost a man with integrity, loyalty, values and compassion. We lost someone who knew the meaning of brotherhood. We lost a man who was looked upon by many,” said Todd Pruitt, co-owner of SConFire.com. “Words cannot explain the loss that many of us feel right now. One thing that needs to be remembered in this horrible time is that Steve left something with each and every one of us to be remembered. He has made us stronger and taught us lifelong lessons. He may not be with us in person but he will always be with us in spirit.”
Skipton passed away at the young age of just 41-years-old. He leaves behind a wife and four children.
A celebration of his life will be held Thursday August 28, 2014 at 1:00 pm at TBD with full firefighter honors. A mass will be held at a later date in New Jersey. Expressions of sympathy may be viewed or submitted online at www.mcalister-smith.com.
