BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Today, a Goose Creek man accused in a horrific case of animal cruelty faced a judge.
According to Deputy Solicitor Bryan Alfaro, Loney Garrett, 66, pled guilty to ten counts of ill treatment of animals. Each count carries a range of 180 days to five years behind bars.
Alfaro says sentencing will be scheduled after the pre-sentencing report is completed. The deputy solicitors says, however, he’s not sure exactly when that will be.
Last year, Garrett was charged with 43 counts of ill treatment after deputies say they found close to 200 dead dogs behind his home in Goose Creek.
According to deputies, Garrett made little effort to bury many of the animals. Authorities say neighbors first alerted deputies of the problem after complaining of a foul odor in the air.
Deputies says they found about 45 dogs barely hanging on to life. They were taken from his home and many were placed in the care of the Berkeley County SPCA.
Family members have always maintained that Garrett is not a bad person. At the time of his arrest, his wife stated that her husband cared for those dogs; however, after he became sick he got in over his head.
Since his bond hearing in February 2013, Garrett has been out of jail on bond.
