BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.—The last major disaster to rock the Palmetto State was Hurricane Hugo in 1989. If you talk to many people, they’ll tell you the state is long overdue for another major disaster. If and when that happens, first responders want to be ready.
On September 24th and 25th, the South Carolina Aquatic Helicopter Rescue Team (SC-HART) will take part in a disaster exercise at the Berkeley County Emergency Services Training Center located on 474 Reid Hill Road in Moncks Corner.
The operation will be conducted from a scenario script and initiated by a phone call from the Charleston area, indicating the local emergency response forces require SC-HART assistance.
In order to train personnel in an emergency flooding scenerio, the Berkeley County Emergency Preparedness team is seeking five volunteers to play victims. The volunteers will enact the part of victims trapped by rising flood waters.
This exercise is a joint venture between South Carolina Aquatic Helicopter Aquatic Rescue, the South Carolina Army National Guard, South Carolina Task Force-1, and personnel from the Berkeley County Emergency Services Training Center,
The training will involve hoisting the “victims” to safety, in-flight safety procedures, and post-rescue patient processing.
Volunteers should be at 474 Reid Hill Road in Moncks Corner at 9:00 a.m. on September 24. The training procedure will begin at 10:00 a.m. In case of inclement weather, the training will commence on September 25.
For more information or to sign up as a volunteer, contact Tom Smith, the Director of Berkeley County Emergency Preparedness, at 843-719-4817.
