(Open letter from Dr. Allie Clay on why she’s supporting Rindy Ryan, a former school teacher, for Berkeley County School Board District 2.)
To the Editor:
I was thrilled to find out that Rindy Ryan is running for a seat on the Berkeley County School Board. Okay- full disclosure- she’s a friend of mine. But that is really beside the point. I could not think of a better candidate to fill this position.
I think a lot of people know that Rindy became involved in the debate over the placement and configuration of the new k-8 being built off Clements Ferry Road. They know she was a staunch advocate for holding the school board at their word and keeping the current k-8 on Daniel Island. They know that she started a Facebook page and rallied the community to insist that the will of the residents be heard. Most people realize that this led to the creation of the committee that helped establish the current plan.
Here’s what most people don’t realize: Rindy became involved in this issue way before most of us had this on our radar. She became involved because she has three of her own children in Berkeley county schools, because she has been a teacher herself, and because she is the kind of person who steps forward to do the right thing.
Yes, we all care about the education of the children in our school district, but Rindy is the one who goes to all the school board meetings (and I’m talking about way before she considered running for a seat), stays up half the night reading any relevant information she can get her hands on, and calls public officials to ask them to justify their decisions. She does these things because she feels a genuine sense of responsibility to do what she can towards the education of our kids. And I am not referring only to kids on Daniel Island. I am most assuredly referring to all kids in Berkeley County. Rindy did not retire from the process once the future of the Daniel Island School was secured. Rather, she was determined to put aside politics and fulfill her charge in finding a solution to best serve all of Berkeley County.
So yes, she’s a friend, but I can think of no other person with the ethics, intelligence, experience and tenacity that she has. The fact that she is willing to serve on the School Board is a boon for us all.
Sincerely,
Dr. Allie Clay
Berkeley County resident
