BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.—On Friday, a 44-year-old woman faced a judge in bond court after deputies say she pointed a gun at a pregnant woman’s stomach and threatened to shoot her and her baby.
Julie Gookins is charged with first degree burglary, kidnapping, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and attempted murder. She remains behind bars at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center. Her bond was denied.
According to an incident report, the victim, who is currently eight months pregnant, was unloading groceries from her car at her home on Decatur Drive in the Summerville area when Gookins reportedly approached her with a handgun, pointed it at her stomach and told her that she would shoot her and her baby if she did not walk to the backyard of her home with her.
Deputies stated that once the victim and Gookins made it to the backyard, the victim was able disarm Gookins and knocked the magazine from the gun. The pregnant woman then threw the handgun into the pond located behind her house.
During this time, a neighbor reportedly heard the commotion nearby and grabbed Gookins as she was trying to flee the scene and forced her to the ground and held her there until officers with the Berkeley Co. Sheriff’s Office arrived.
Luckily, the victim did not need any medical attention.
Gookins was placed in handcuffs and transported to the jail.
