On Thursday September 18 at 4:30 p.m., Trident Cancer Center will hold a ribbon cutting for its new expansion.
Trident Cancer Center staff and physicians, North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey, Representative Jenny Horne and other local elected officials will be on hand for this momentous occasion.
The 3,500 square foot expansion includes the addition of the TruBeam Linear Accelerator, which delivers more powerful cancer treatments with pinpoint accuracy and precision.
Trident Cancer Center’s TrueBeam is the first in the Charleston area to be equipped with optical intracranial tracking solution software.
The TrueBeam imager can produce the three-dimensional images used to fine-tune tumor targeting in 60% less time than compared with previous Varian image-guided technologies.
The Cancer Center expansion also includes a tranquility garden and water fountain for the enjoyment of patients. The total project cost was $6 million.
The most significant upgrade of the expansion is the TrueBeam Linear Accelerator, a product of Varian Medical Systems. This state-of-the-art radiotherapy technology aims to destroy cancer with treatments that last just a few minutes a day. Although traditional radiation therapy machines offer quality treatment, TrueBeam technology decreases treatment times to almost half with a more effective and precise treatment delivery method.
“We are extremely pleased to offer this ground breaking technology to our patients,” said Ryan Clements, Trident Cancer Center Director.
The project also included upgrades to treatment planning software and additional aesthetic improvements.
“South Carolina residents deserve the very best cancer fighting technology available. Today is a win for the patient in the war against cancer,” said Terence van Arkel, Trident Medical Center’s Chief Operating Officer.
