BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–On Thursday shortly before 9 p.m., the Cainhoy Fire Department responded to the Nucor Berkeley Plant located at 1455 Hagan Avenue, off of Cainhoy Road, for a reported structure fire.
Once on the scene, they immediately requested mutual aid from Charleston County to respond as well.
Cainhoy units were first to arrive and found a large mill building with smoke and fire showing. Crews confirmed that everyone was out of the building and that the buildings utilities had been secured.
After initial assessment of the scene, crews advised that a conveyor system on the exterior of the building was on fire, with flames extending into the building.
Crews made a defensive attack and were unable to enter the building due to safety concerns. Crews were able to knock the bulk of the fire down on the exterior within 45 minutes.
Ladder trucks were used to contain the rest of the fire, and the fire was placed under control at 10:19pm. Crews were also able to stop the fire from spreading to any other buildings or hazardous materials areas.
Crews remained on scene for approximately four hours to douse hotspots and ensure that all of the fire was extinguished. No occupant or firefighter injuries were reported.
The fire caused significant damage; however the exact extent of the damage is not yet determined. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Cainhoy Fire Department was assisted on scene by the City of Charleston Fire Department, North Charleston Fire Department, and Cordesville Rural Fire Department. Berkeley County EMS and Berkeley County Sherriff’s Deputies also responded to the scene.
