BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The United States Department of Education announced today that Hanahan Elementary School and Hanahan Middle School were chosen in the 2014 National Blue Ribbon Schools Program. Hanahan Elementary was one of only five for school throughout the state to be honored and Hanahan Middle is the only middle school in the state to be nominated for the prestigious award.
Hanahan Middle follows its Berkeley County neighbor, Marrington Middle, which won in 2012, as the only two South Carolina middle schools to be honored as Blue Ribbon Schools in the past sixteen years. In 2010, Howe Hall Arts Infused Magnet School was honored with the Blue Ribbon for its achievements in the elementary school category.
The program, run by the U.S. Department of Education, honors public and private K-12 schools that are either high performing or that demonstrate dramatic gains in student achievement despite having a high percentage of students with disadvantaged backgrounds. Hanahan’s Elementary and Middle schools qualified on both criteria.
Berkeley County School District Superintendent, Dr. Rodney Thompson said, “I would like to congratulate all of our teachers and support staff members at each of these schools for their commitment to academic excellence in Berkeley County.”
Hanahan Elementary School Principal, Thomas Sparkman, said “I consider this a tribute to our teachers, students and community who work so well as a team. Hanahan has been a strong community for many years with a tradition of excellence. We are just trying to continue that tradition.”
Hanahan Middle School Principal, Robin Rogers, said, “It is a great honor and it validates the efforts of our teachers, students and this community. To have two schools chosen as National Blue Ribbon Schools from the same community proves that the local support here is second to none.”
The other 2012 S. C. nominees are: Prince of Peace Catholic School in Taylors; Royall Elementary School in Florence School District One; Socastee Elementary School in Horry County School District and West View Elementary School in Spartanburg School District Six.
Per federal guidelines, South Carolina is allowed to nominate five schools per year for the award. Each school has to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) under the federal No Child Left Behind Act for the past two years in order to qualify for the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program.
