GOOSE CREEK, S.C.—A Goose Creek veteran and his family are without a home after an early morning fire destroyed it.

The Goose Creek Rural Fire Department responded to the scene around 4 a.m. Sunday on Sass Drive. Luckily, no one was home at the time of the incident.

Mary Lee Taylor told Live 5 News that she was in Florence along with her husband celebrating his birthday when they learned their house had burned to the ground.

“Everything was lost. Everything was gone,” she stated. “The most important thing is that everyone is alive and no one got hurt.”

Taylor told the TV station that the fire destroyed everything the family had collected in almost the 60 years they had lived in the home—including her husband’s military certificates and discharge papers from his time in the United States Air Force.

SLED is currently investigating the cause of the fire since it occurred when no one was home at the time.

Investigators believe the fire may have started in the breaker box which was near the couple’s washer and dryer.
