Boy Scout leader discusses stolen trailers with Rocky D

DANIEL ISLAND, S.C.—Bryan Brain, the committee chair for Daniel Island Troop 519, recently appeared on Radio Free Rocky D to discuss the trailers stolen from two separate Boy Scouts troops.

“Who would steal from a church? That just never really came into our mind,” Brain told Rocky D.

Recently, Brain says thieves stole their newly purchased trailer that they kept parked at Holy Cross Church on Daniel Island.

“They brought the tools to take the chain off the front but because we think it was dark, they didn’t know about the chain on the back. So our particular trailer is hopefully somewhere in the Charleston area, limping around with a broken back axle,” Brain stated.

Brain says the trailer was purchased approximately two months ago, therefore, they hadn’t placed the Boy Scout logos on it just yet. It was also scheduled for a paint job this week.

“Inside the trailer was all of our tents, our camp stove, ropes, tarps—everything you need to take thirty boys on a camping trip was in there,” Brain stated. “We think all of that together was valued at $6,000.”

Around the same time, thieves stole a trailer from Boy Scout Troop 519 on Daniel Island, thieves also stole a trailer from Boy Scout Troup 776 in Sangaree.

“I think this is directly related to the Summerville theft as well, so somewhere there are two trailers. One of them is brand new white, and one of them has the Boy Scout logo on it. Somewhere there are two trailers where they weren’t there last week.”

Brain says, unfortunately, neither the trailer nor equipment inside was insured.

“It was actually covered as part of the church’s policy, but unfortunately there’s a $10,000 deductible on that,” stated Brain. “We hope that someone in the general public will see two trailers sitting there that weren’t there a week ago and can notify local law enforcement and they can catch them.”

Since the trailer was taken, Brain says he’s tried to use this incident as a learning experience for the boys of his troop.

“One of the things that I was telling my son, who is a Boy Scout, is that it doesn’t matter what happens to you. Because a lot things that happen to you, you can’t do anything about. What matters is how you react to it and how you’re going to pick yourself up and keep going,” explained Brain.

Even with much of their equipment gone, Brain says he has no plans to cancel any upcoming activities for the Boy Scouts.

“I had a long conversation with the scout master last night, and our intention is do all the activities that we had planned for the boys over the next few months. We have to just lean more heavily on equipment from the parents,” stated Brain.
