MONCKS CORNER, S.C.–According to Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury, shortly before 9 a.m. on Thursday, Stephen Kuffel, 33, of Moncks Corner was working at Berkeley Scrap Metal in Moncks Corner.
While there the coroner says he was using a cutting torch when an explosion took place.
Kuffel was reportedly using the torch to cut the top out of a barrel that once stored a flammable liquid.
He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.
Salisbury says an autopsy will be conducted to determine his exact cause of death.
The death is under investigation by the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and the Moncks Corner Police Dept.
