BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.—A Berkeley County mother recently sent WCBD-TV cell phone video capturing what appears to be a bus driver texting while driving on the job.
While the video is only 24 seconds long, Melissa Steiferman wanted to expose the careless driver’s actions in hopes it’ll prevent others from doing the same.
“We worry for the safety of our students. This needs to be brought to the public’s attention,” Steiferman said in an email.
On Wednesday, Superintendent Dr. Rodney Thompson issued the following statement to The Berkeley Observer about the incident:
“The safety and security of our students continues to be our top priority. The use of a cell phone while operating a school bus is in violation of Berkeley County School District’s policy. As a result of our investigation, this individual is no longer an employee of Berkeley County School District,” said Thompson.
According to Texting & Driving Safely, text messaging while driving makes a crash 23X more likely. In 2011, 1.3 million crashes involved cell phones.
